Why IELTS scores are so important

For people interested in immigrating to Canada directly as permanent residents (PR), the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) exam is a make or break. The Canadian government prioritizes candidates that have a strong command of the English language for an obvious reason – Canada is predominantly an English-speaking country and accepting immigrants with high IELTS scores will have a higher likelihood of assimilating into Canadian society much faster than those that struggle with the English language.

It is no secret that Canada has a slow population growth and given that it is the second largest country in the world, it needs a LOT of people to prosper economically in the long term. For this reason, Canada remains open to immigrants and has set some standards on who to accept directly as a PR. Aside from one’s English proficiency (measured through the IELTS exam), age, skilled work experience, education level, and family ties in Canada are heavily taken into consideration. Applicants with the right combination of all these factors will be granted Canadian permanent residency within 6 to 8 months from submission and will be able to enjoy the benefits of becoming Canadian PRs / citizens, listed here: https://www.myvisa4canada.com/why-canada.

So how high does one’s IELTS score have to be? Below are the four categories and the brackets.

Listening 8.5 to 9.0 (highest bracket) – Ideal

7.5 to 8.0 – Average

6.0 to 7.0 – Below Average

Reading 8.0 to 9.0 (highest bracket) – Ideal

7.0 to 7.5 – Average Below

7.0 – Below Average

Speaking 7.5 to 9.00 (highest bracket) – Ideal

7.0 – Average Below

7.00 – Below Average

Writing 7.50 to 9.0 (highest bracket) – Ideal

7.00 – Average Below

7.0 – Below Average

For all those excited to enjoy the benefits and quality of life in Canada for yourself and your family and would like to apply directly as permanent residents, do not take the IELTS exam for granted – especially if you are in your thirties. As mentioned above, the Canadian government looks at different factors about you. So if you are 31 years old and above (at the time of application), your IELTS scores should be in the “ideal” range to maximize your chances of success. But if you are 30 years old and below (at the time of application) and have IELTS scores that are just in the “average” range, you still have a chance of being accepted directly as a PR just because you are younger.

Please note that there are other immigration streams available if your English level is not ideal, past 31 years old, with less education, or less skilled work experience, or with no family ties in Canada, etc. Contact us via WhatsApp at + 1 778 288 7388 or email [email protected] or for a free eligibility assessment.
